No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
