The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
